World Press Freedom Day

Taking place on 3rd May every year.

Celebrating the principles of press freedom.

Updated 1 year ago

World Press Freedom Day aims to:

  • celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom
  • evaluate press freedom around the world
  • defend the media from attacks on their independence
  • and pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession.

It also serves as a reminder that in dozens of countries around the world, publications are censored, fined, suspended and closed down, while journalists, editors and publishers are harassed, attacked, detained and even murdered. Further information is available on the UN World Press Freedom Day web pages.

You could also take a look at the Global Campaign for Free Expression's Article 19 website. You can find relevant teaching resources by browsing through the resources listed on our database under the topics of 'Media' or 'Human rights'.
