16 September every year: Remembering the Montreal Protocol to protect the ozone layer.

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 16 September the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, commemorating the date, in 1987, on which the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer was signed.

Some good news! The UN says that the Ozone layer is ‘showing signs of recovery’ (BBC News, 11 September 2014)

This YouTube clip has a bit of background information on the Ozone Layer and the Montreal Protocol:

For further information and background materials to help you mark Ozone Day in your school, visit the UN’s Ozone Day web pages. and the UN Environment Programme’s ‘Precious Ozone’ web page.

The theme for Ozone Day 2016 is Ozone and Climate: Restored by a World United, recognising collective efforts towards the restoration of the ozone layer over the past three decades and the global commitment to combat climate change.

The UN Environment Programme has also developed a suite of materials for children about ozone. And there is even an Ozzy Ozone website for children at: www.ozzyozone.org.
