2 October every year: Sharing the message of non-violence through education and public awareness.

The International Day of Non-Violence is marked on 2 October, the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, leader of the Indian independence movement and pioneer of the philosophy and strategy of non-violence. It is seen as an opportunity to “disseminate the message of non-violence, including through education and public awareness”. For further information, visit the UN’s International Day of Non-Violence web page.

You can find teaching resources relating to non-violence by browsing through the ones listed in our database under the topic of ‘Peace’. You can also find out more about the life of Gandhi on the BBC iWonder and BBC Religion web pages.
