2 April every year: Celebrating children’s books and inspiring a love of reading.

2 April is Hans Christian Andersen’s birthday and since 1967 International Children’s Book Day has been celebrated on or around this day to inspire a love of reading and to call attention to children’s books.

Each year the Day is sponsored by a different country member of the International Board on Books for Young People. It decides on a theme and invites an author from that country to write a message to the children of the world and a well-known illustrator to design a poster.

You can check out the annual theme and find out which country has sponsored different years on the International Children’s Book Day web pages. You can also view themes and posters from previous years.

Why not celebrate International Children’s Book Day at school by using books with a global theme? Have a browse through the resources listed on the Global Dimension database under the subject ‘English: story/literature’.

We have also written a feature on Literature and global issues, which includes lots of suggestions for books to read with a global theme.
