Your students may already be familiar with the global challenge of climate change. They may already be cutting down on waste and saving water. But are they aware of their impact as energy consumers?
The Consumer Classroom project is running a European inter-school competition which encourages schools to work together and get their students to be 'energy smart'. They have developed an Energy Resource Kit with key information on the link between energy and consumption, as well as lesson plans, activities, videos and quizzes around the topic.
To participate in the competition, here's what you have to do:
Register on the Consumer Classroom website and connect with a partner school
Get students from both schools to research and share their 'energy footprint', logging their daily behaviour as energy consumers. This can cover aspects such as transport (e.g. their parents’ car use), heating and cooling, thermal insulation, lighting, water use (bathing, washing, and gardening), energy efficiency of household appliances and personal appliances (including mobile phones, headphones, tablets and computers).
Students then collaborate to create an Online Energy Consumption Tool Kit for Teens. This online tool should be based on students’ own ideas of ways that help them measure and improve their energy footprint and become 'energy smart'. A great chance to be creative!
