One in eight children in the UK speaks a language other than English as their first language. This website is a growing collection of short stories, both new and traditional, from all around the world. The stories are available in English, plus their original language (see list below). They can be read and listened to online, or downloaded, all for free.
The stories can help children understand each other, as well as celebrate and and learn about their own and other cultures and traditions. The website is provided by the charity KidsOut with funding from the Big Lottery and Esmee Fairbairn. As well as the stories there is a support area on the website for teachers (free registration required), with advice articles, classroom guides, support for EAL teaching and lesson plans for Key Stages 2 and 3 (ages 7-14). There is also space for schools to share responses to the stories. All in all, a great global dimension resource.
The languages featured include: Akan, Albanian, Arabic, Bengali, Cantonese, Danish, English, Filipino, French, German, Greek, Gujarati,Hindi, Mandarin, Pashto, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Somali, Spanish, Tamil, Turkish, Urdu, Yoruba.
