The focus of this assembly is waste – looking at the ‘waste hierarchy’, and working out how to reduce the waste we produce, and what to do with it to reduce impact on the environment. It starts with looking at the different options regarding everyday waste, and looks at stories of how things become other things. There are examples of how people and communities around the world are reusing and recycling material in new, exciting and creative ways.
The kit is made up of a PDF of teachers’ notes, plus a set of PowerPoint slides which can be used as it is or adapted according to the needs of the teacher and pupils. There are lots of ideas to explore, enough for follow-up activities and/or further assemblies on this issue.
This one of a series of Think Global primary assembly kits. The first in the series, Be Choosy About Your Food, is available to download as a free sample. Two others are available, price £7.50 each, or £20 for all three: Respecting Rights, which looks at the issue of human rights and Connection Detectives, which explores our global connections.
