This website consists of 100 resources based on objects selected from museums in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales and from the British Museum. It has been funded by the Department for Education to help equip teachers to teach the new national history curriculum in England (starting September 2014). The objects and associated teaching resources may be used individually to support and enhance teachers’ current practice or can be combined to provide object-based units of study for a particular historical period, culture or theme.
The objects are searchable by Key Stage, history topic, date and place, as well as the following themes: beliefs and ideas; conflict; empires; rule and rulers; social and personal life; technology and arts; trade and transport. For each object there is a wealth of information and teaching ideas, as well as a ‘bigger picture’ exploration of the object’s historical – often global – context.
The website harnesses the power of objects to motivate young people’s interest in history and to provide teachers with resources to inspire their students’ study of events and people in the past.
