Struggles for Justice

A teaching resource for Citizenship at Key Stages 3 and 4

KS3: ages 11-14KS4: ages 14-16WebsitePDF

Struggles for Justice provides five free downloadable teaching modules suitable for Citizenship classes at Key Stages 3 and 4. The resource aims to show young people that it is possible to make their voices heard and effect change in society and that this is best achieved when groups and communities pull together, get organised and unite. It does this by using examples from the history of struggles for justice in Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) communities, stretching back 50 years, and showing how they relate to issues facing BME communities today.

The five modules are:

1. Community and Identity
2. Community Safety
3. Media and Racism
4. Racial Discrimination
5. Youth and Protest.

Each module is based on primary documents from the Institute of Race Relations’ Black History Collection and contains exercises that can be used on an interactive whiteboard. An accompanying, separate section contains teachers’ notes, curriculum links, a glossary, and a list of further sources of information.
