This teaching resource from Oxfam is based around a short film, part of Oxfam’s Stand as One campaign which asks the public to stand in solidarity with people forced to flee.

Background information is provided about the film and about refugee issues. There are also accompanying teaching ideas to enable 8-14 year-olds to think about our similarities and what we all need to have a good life. The aim is to build empathy with refugees and imagine what it would be like to leave everything behind. Pupils are encouraged to explore:

  • How are we the same? How are we different?
  • Needs and wants
  • Watching the film clip
  • Put it into words (using the film transcript as a stimulus to create poems)
  • What would you take with you if you had to leave home?

This resource was updated in 2017 and now includes campaigning a campaigning activity. Students are encouraged to write compelling postcards to MPs on the issue of family reunion. The campaign is leading up to a Private Members bill vote on March 16 2018, when MPs will vote on a to reunite refugee families. The new resources include:

  • Teachers Guide – Includes useful information on refugee family reunion, the new Private Member’s Bill and Oxfam’s Stand as One campaign.
  • Workshop Activity – Stand in the shoes of a refugee and learn how the law affects you. Use role play to explore the stories of people who have been forced to flee. This guide also includes information about ordering your postcards.
  • Action Guide – A short guide to help young people run a successful postcard campaign in their school.
  • MP Cover Letter template – A letter template to help you when contacting your MP.
  • Slideshow – Learn more about the refugee crisis with striking statistics and photographs from around the world.
