Sazia’s Story

Early and forced marriage

KS3: ages 11-14KS4: ages 14-16WebsiteFilm

Every year, 10 million girls are married young and too often against their will. This often means a sudden end to their childhood and the chance of going to school. It can shorten their lives by leaving them more vulnerable to violence, HIV and death in childbirth. A key focus of Plan UK’s campaign ‘Because I am a Girl’ is to support an end to early and forced marriage in the world’s poorest countries.

This secondary teaching resource aims to raise awareness of the issue of early and forced marriages. Its starting point is a short animated film based on the true story of a young British girl whose family tried to force her into marriage. Students consider the choices Sazia has to make; create an assembly around the issue; and explore the impact that early and forced marriages have on girls all around the world.

The resource would fit well into secondary Citizenship or PSHE classes, but can also be used in tutor time or assemblies.
