This cross-curricular, interactive DVD from Music for Change contains over an hour’s video footage shot on location in Shanghai, plus an image library, a teacher’s guide and suggestions for upper primary (KS2) activities and resources. It is presented by a musician and dancer who lives and works in the UK and Shanghai.
We meet two children from Shanghai and find out about their daily lives. We explore different means of transport in the city, and different types of food. We visit a bamboo forest and find out about this plant and its many uses. We explore Daoist and Buddhist temples and get a demonstration of calligraphy. And we try out a dance workshop, discover Kunqku opera, experience the Silk and Bamboo music of Shanghai’s tea houses, and explore the differences and similarities between Chinese and UK instruments, scales and music.
The accompanying teacher’s guide explains thoroughly how to use the resource throughout the primary curriculum and offers suggestions for further resources and activities.
