Migration and Global Learning

One of a series of termly activity kits for members of Think Global’s Schools Network. Available to members each term, each issue of The global dimension in my classroom includes a range of activities, lesson ideas and more to help you explore global connections. ‘Migration’ is a word that we hear often, in lots of different contexts. Sometimes, it gets confused with other words that might mean very different things, like ‘refugee’ or ‘asylum seeker’. For young people (and adults too!) reading or listening to news reports or other media referring to ‘migration’, it can be difficult to work out what the stories are really about, or to think critically about the strong and emotive messages that can be involved. This Activity Kit provides information and teaching ideas for Key Stage 2 pupils (ages 7 to 11), and encourages them to think empathetically and more deeply about this topic.

• The ‘Getting started’ section provides introductory questions for pupils to begin exploring the concept of migration.
• The ‘Getting critical’ section looks at the reasons why people might migrate, and uses examples from history and the present day to get pupils thinking about what it might be like to migrate.
• The ‘Resources’ section provides links to further information and teaching resources, including those for Key Stage 3 (ages 11 to 14).
