Sustrans is a leading UK charity enabling people to choose healthier, cheaper and cleaner journeys. This teaching resource explicitly links learning about sustainability and travel cultures to the Literacy and Numeracy Framework in Wales, and can also be used within the English curriculum.
The resource integrates numerical data-sets, films, images and written articles into a Year 8 scheme of work to develop and assess student Oracy. It has cross-curricular links to English, PSE, Geography, Science and the ESDGC framework. There are also specific links to global learning, and case studies showing how people travel in different parts of the globe. In particular there is a focus on The Netherlands and how the government has developed a cycle culture as an alternative to car-culture – this lesson is resourced with a short film about Bikes in Amsterdam.
The resource can be downloaded free as a PDF from the Sustrans website (see link below). You will need to fill in a form before downloading.
