Send a Cow works hand in hand with poor families, teaching them the skills they need to build new lives free from poverty and hunger. They think it’s important that school children learn about sustainability and the reality of life in Africa, away from pictures of starving children and big game safaris.

Their Lessons from Africa website is full of practical teaching resources provided in easy-to-use chunks, and is quickly searchable according to age range, theme and subject area. Lots of the resources are free, and are easily downloaded from the website. There are lesson plans and activity packs available as PDFs or PowerPoints, plenty of video clips, and image galleries.

One of the great things about many of the resources is that they feature a practical, hands-on activity – such as creating a bag garden, or an energy-saving mud stove, or a toy from waste materials. It’s easy to see that both primary and secondary students will just love getting to grips with the activity and at the same time will learn so much about the adults and children from different African countries that are explaining to them how it’s done.

All in all, this is a fantastic source of lesson materials about Africa.
