This report and documentary film explore the issue of how consumer choice impacts upon coffee producers and the environment. The film includes interviews with coffee farmers, market experts, consumer organisations and some key figures in the international coffee sector.
As well as an introduction to the principles and practices behind fair trade, the film also explores other coffee certification systems, such as the organic standard, and rainforest preservation. A balanced approach is taken, looking at both the benefits and challenges to both farmers and consumers.
The report goes into more detail, and gives some case study examples of the coffee certification process in action.
The material would be ideal for post 16 learning within Geography and Economics, and the film could also be used with a younger audience. The Consumers International website also provides some supplementary material.
