This book provides dozens of inspirational stories of women living in Africa, alongside striking photographs from the photojournalist Mark Read. The women are united by the fact that they were unable to attend school because their families could not afford the fees, but were helped by the organisation CAMFED (who published this book to celebrate a 10 year anniversary).
The stories show determination, and a desire to learn despite overwhelming obstacles; and highlights all that the women have achieved, as doctors, lawyers, health workers and business women.
The book provides a great antidote to negative presentations of Africa. The stories could form the basis of a secondary school assembly, or act as a stimulus for creative writing.
