This website from the Centre for Alternative Technology is an eco-footprint teaching resource, and has been developed for teachers of Key Stages 2-3 (ages 7-14) in Wales. But all educators – in Wales and beyond – with an interest in teaching about sustainable futures, will find the content relevant and useful.
Pupils will find out about climate change, biodiversity, peak oil and global poverty, and how these are all connected. They will also discover some options for local solutions to global issues, and can use this knowledge to develop sustainable regional plans.
The site is designed as a seven week project covering a new theme each week, but it could also fit into two weeks, or the activities could be used ‘stand-alone’. The seven themes covered are:
- The Big Picture
- Think Global, Act Local.
For each theme the site provides downloadable lesson plans, suggestions for activities, background information, and slideshows of images with text. It also gives advice and links on how to access other resources.
It is a useful planning tool for statutory core subjects and PSE; also great for cross-curricular work in ESDGC, Skills for Life, Learning Outside the Classroom, Careers and the world of work, and useful for schemes such as Eco Schools, Healthy Schools, or Fair Trade Schools.
