Where does the food on your plate come from? How old is the recipe? Who invented it? How were the ingredients produced? Where and when were the vegetables picked? Who picked them?
These are just some of the question on Food Stories, a colorful website aimed at KS3 and KS4 citizenship and geography students. The interactive website traces the changes that have taken place in the UK’s food culture over the last century.
Students can play with animations and listen to audio interviews from the British Library Sound Archive to investigate the ways in which food relates to identity, cultural diversity, the environment, technology, farming, shopping and travel. A set of teachers’ notes and classroom activities accompany each section of the site, which also includes an Investigative Journalist’s Notebook as a fun way to encourage students to navigate the site.
