Fly Kites Not Drones

Fly Kites Not Drones is a creative non-violence project for young people. At its heart is the true story of Aymel, a boy from Afghanistan who never really knew his father because of a drone strike. A kite in the sky is a beautiful image but the lives of the people holding the string can be very different. In Afghanistan, children are afraid of blue skies because they are the perfect weather for drones. Fly Kites Not Drones is for the children in all the countries living with that fear. The website provides teachers and anyone who works with young people with resources to learn about human rights and the effect of armed drones in the skies above us. The website is a joint effort from Voices for Creative Non-Violence UK, the Drone Campaign Network, Pax Christi UK and Quaker Peace & Social Witness. Resources on the site include two assembly plans, one for upper primary and one for secondary. There are also five workshop plans aimed at different age groups, plus a curriculum map showing how each workshop complements different areas of learning. The goal is to provide young people with a learning path to understand human rights and armed drones, building to the creative experience of flying a kite.
