Exploring Our Roots

Stories of Immigration to Britain

KS2: ages 7-11KS3: ages 11-14Teacher's PackDVDBook

This excellent teaching pack uses interviews and thoughtful, structured activities to explore the experiences of immigrants to Britain from the 1940s to 1975. It concentrates on the lives of Black and Asian people and raises awareness of the history, experience and culture that they bought with them.

The pack is split into five sections looking at: immigration, 1940-1975; settlement and making communities; working life; culture and identity; and the next generation. Each section includes an introduction for teachers, classroom activities of varying difficulties and photocopiable pupils’ pages.

Additional material is provided on the DVD, which contains interview excerpts, photos that can be printed onto A4 for activities, vocabulary lists and maps. The activities are bought to life with quotations from immigrants who originated in South Asia, China, West Africa and the Caribbean. Although the people interviewed were all from Manchester, the activities are not region specifc and the themes are certainly relevant across the UK.

Overall an engaging resource which will allow students to gain a deeper understanding of immigration and settlement.
