Data Power

A computing resource for 9-13 year olds

This set of resources from Oxfam will help teachers energise computing lessons by getting pupils to delve into data from across the world.

Data Power supports learners to strengthen their data-handling skills and consider how data can be used to improve lives. Learners take on an investigative role by collecting, analysing and visualising data about the lives of children in different countries.

The resources consist of:

  • Three unit plans (including any accompanying resource and activity sheets)
  • A PowerPoint slideshow (for use in all three units)
  • Three spreadsheets (for use in Units 2 and 3)
  • A short video clip (Talking about Young Lives) and accompanying background notes (for use in a further activity idea in Unit 2 to extend older learners)
  • Evaluation (to assess learning at the end of each unit).

Whilst the focus is on Computing and ICT, some activities could easily be linked to other areas of the curriculum, such as Maths/numeracy, English/literacy and PSHE or Citizenship.

The resources have been created in partnership with Young Lives (an international research project studying child poverty) and with the support of Computing At School.
