This module focuses on China as an emerging global power with huge manufacturing capabilities and a rising consumer culture. China is expected to be the largest economy in the world by 2040, but this success has not trickled down through the whole of Chinese society – 250 million people still live on less than US$1 a day. This resource highlights both the industrial and commercial success of the country, as well as the future challenges faced (including population, sustainability and inequality).
This article could be used for teaching about rapid economic and urban development, industrialisation, BRICs and sustainable development.
