This pack provides lessons, an assembly and films which are aimed to encourage students aged 14-16 to explore the issues surrounding the use of the death penalty, one of Amnesty’s oldest and most established campaigns.
The assembly is in the form of a fictional play, and aims to raise awareness of alleged juvenile offenders on death row, based on the testimony and experiences of real people. There are two lesson plans following this; one an introduction to the issues and the other taking the form of a debate.
This resource is designed to be balanced and to facilitate open debate and discussion for and against the death penalty. However, teachers should note that Amnesty International opposes the use of the death penalty in all circumstances.
The materials are also downloadable for free from the Amnesty website.
