Approximately 34 million people in the world are living with HIV/AIDS, the majority of these in sub-Saharan Africa. The United Nations, in conjunction with the World Health Organisation, has declared 1 December World AIDS Day.
For more information, including global statistics, and the annual theme for the Day, visit the UN Observances World AIDS Day web pages. It's also worth visiting the World AIDS Day website set up by the National Aids Trust (NAT) in the UK. NAT has produced a schools pack, which is available to download at: www.nat.org.uk/Publications/Teachers-resources.aspx.
There are some good images available of people marking World AIDS Day around the world at The Big Picture - Boston.com. The United Nations Association – UK (UNA-UK) has a page with background information and teaching activities for World AIDS Day.
