The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction aims to promote a global culture of disaster reduction, including disaster prevention, mitigation and preparedness. You can find further information on the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) website and on the UN International Day for Disaster Reduction web pages. UNISDR's "Sendai Seven" campaign centres on the seven targets of the Sendai Framework, the first of which is reducing disaster mortality. The campaign seeks to create a wave of awareness about actions taken to reduce mortality around the world. For 2017 the theme of International Day for Disaster Reduction focused on Target B of the campaign - to reduce the number of people affected by disasters by 2030. Find out more at www.unisdr.org/2017/iddr/ The UNISDR has also developed an online disaster simulation game for young people, Stop Disasters!, which includes lots of background information as well as resources for teachers. For further resources to help you mark this Day at school, have a browse through the resources listed on the Global Dimension database under the topic of 'Disasters'.
