27 September every year: Raising awareness of the importance of tourism and its impacts worldwide.

September 27 was established as World Tourism Day by the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). The aim of the day is to raise awareness that tourism is vital to the international community and to show how it affects social, cultural, political and economic values worldwide.

Each year has a particular theme. The theme for 2017 was “Sustainable Tourism – a Tool for Development” focusing on how sustainable tourism can contribute to development. For further details, visit the World Tourism Day page on the UNWTO website.

The UNWTO has developed a Global Code of Ethics for Tourism, “to help minimise the negative impacts of tourism on the environment and on cultural heritage while maximising the benefits for residents of tourism destinations”. It includes sections on ‘The Responsible Tourist’, ‘Trips for travellers’ and ‘Sustainable development’. It might be a useful tool to prompt discussions at secondary or post-16 level. You can download it from http://ethics.unwto.org/en/content/full-text-global-code-ethics-tourism
