10 November every year: Strengthening public awareness on the role of science for peaceful and sustainable societies.

Established by UNESCO in 2001, the objectives of World Science Day for Peace and Development (WSDPD) are:

  • To strengthen public awareness on the role of science for peaceful and sustainable societies
  • To promote national and international solidarity for a shared science between countries
  • To renew national and international commitment for the use of science for the benefit of societies
  • To draw attention to the challenges faced by science and raise support for the scientific endeavour.

Each year has a different theme. The theme for 2017 was ‘Science for Global Understanding’. Further information is available on the UN World Science Day web pages and the Unesco website, which also has some ideas on what you can do to celebrate World Science Day.

The United Nations Association – UK (UNA-UK) has a page with background information and teaching activities for World Science Day.

The following case studies may give you some inspiration for teaching about how science can support peace and development:
» Medicine and its global roots
» Becoming a better Global Citizen – a challenge for the 21st century
