4 January every year: Celebrating the birthday of Louis Braille.

World Braille Day commemorates the birth of Louis Braille. He was born on 4 January 1809 in France, and in 1829 he published his Method of Writing Words, Music, and Plain Song by Means of Dots, for Use by the Blind and Arranged by Them.

You can find out more about Louis Braille from the RNIB website.

This short YouTube clip  could also be useful – it explains the story of Braille:

Globally, some 80% of blindness can be prevented or cured. The charity Sightsavers has been working for over 60 years to combat avoidable blindness in some of the world’s poorest countries. Read stories which show the impact they have had on some people’s lives.
