Week around 20 June every year: to create better understanding between different communities

Refugee Week takes place every year across the world in the week around World Refugee Day on the 20 June. In 2020, Refugee Week is celebrating 22 years of contributions, creativity and resilience of refugees. The 2020 theme for this week is ‘Imagine’. Because when things feel stuck; when the old ways of doing things are no longer working, that’s what we need to do. In the era of Covid-19, the call to imagine feels more important than ever.

In the UK, Refugee Week is a nationwide programme of arts, cultural and educational events that celebrate the contribution of refugees to the UK, and encourages a better understanding between communities.

You can find further information and resources on the Refugee Week website.

If you would like some ideas to help your school mark Refugee Week you can read through our articles Refugees and Refugees welcome?, which provide an introduction to some of the issues. The British Red Cross have developed new resources for Refugee Week including activities for 7–14-year-olds.

You can also find teaching resources by browsing through the resources listed on our database under the topic of ‘Migration & Refugees’.
