Second Thursday in March every year. Celebrating food and promoting healthy eating at school.

In order for young people to achieve and learn in school it is important that they develop a healthy eating habit. The idea of International School Meals Day emerged as a way to raise awareness of the importance in teaching children the value of food to education and culture, the importance of good nutrition and connecting children around the world to foster healthy eating habits in school and at home.

The first International School Meals Day was celebrated in the UK and the USA in March 2013. You can find out more about it from the International School Meals Day website, which has a few examples of teaching resources. Suggested ways to celebrate include:

  • having an International Menu Day
  • planning food tasting sessions or other fun food activities
  • trying some cooking activities with an international theme
  • hosting a workshop on healthy eating
  • going on a trip to a farm/supermarket/restaurant.

The theme of International School Meals Day 2018 is ‘My Food’, encouraging pupils to share their favourite meal, perhaps provided at school or cooked at home with food that is grown locally. Through the written word, drawings or photographs, they can demonstrate why this particular food is so special to them.

There is a competition where young people can submit drawings, photos or poems, with winners published in an international cookbook to be launched on ISMD 2018. Read more on the ISMD website.

The British Council Schools Online website also has ideas to help you celebrate International School Meals Day. Get more ideas by browsing through the resources on our database under the topic of food.
