International Day of the Disappeared
An event every year that begins at 12:00am on day 30 of August, repeating indefinitely
30 August every year: Drawing attention to those who have been imprisoned without their friends or relatives knowing where or why.
The annual commemoration of the International Day of the Disappeared aims to draw attention to those people who have been imprisoned without their friends or relatives knowing where or why; also to highlight the work of those organisations who campaign against secret imprisonment and work to support the ‘disappeared’ and their families.
Awareness-raising events are organised worldwide on this Day by families of the ‘disappeared’. The International Committee of the Red Cross website has information about their work tracing people missing as a result of armed conflict or internal unrest.
