22 May every year: Increasing understanding and awareness of the world’s biodiversity.
The United Nations proclaimed 22 May the International Day for Biological Diversity (IBD) to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. Further information, including details of the theme for each year, can be found on on the UN International Day for Biological Diversity web pages and also on the Convention for Biological Diversity (CBD) website.
The theme for 2016 is Mainstreaming Biodiversity; Sustaining People and their Livelihoods. By halting biodiversity loss, we are investing in people, their lives and their well-being.
If you would like further ideas to help your school learn about how to look after the local and global environment, you could browse through the resources listed on our database under the topics of ‘Biodiversity’ or ‘Environment’.
