Lisa B. from the CND Peace Education Programme introduces their creative writing competition for schools.
The International Day of Peace is observed every year around the world on 21 September. It is a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, among all nations and people. It calls for a ceasefire in conflict zones and an end to war and violence.
Last year, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, dedicated the day to education for peace. In his speech, Ban Ki-moon said:
“Let us pledge to teach our children the value of tolerance and mutual respect. Let us invest in the schools and teachers that will build a fair and inclusive world that embraces diversity. Let us fight for peace and defend it with all our might.”
For this year’s International Day of Peace, we are asking children and young people to give their voice to support peace in the world by entering our creative writing competition
Who can participate?
The competition is open to anyone in Years 3 – 13 and we have three categories:
- Primary Schools
- Secondary Schools
- Sixth Forms and Colleges
The full terms and conditions for entering the competition are on our website but the four most important rules are:
Entries must be original and from students based in England
. The writing should be on the theme of ‘peace’ and/or ‘nuclear weapons’
It should fit onto one side of A4 paper
Entries must be submitted by 1st July 2014
Entries can be anything at all that your students would like to write on the theme such as a poem, short story, play, comic strip, song or rap. Their writing can be either typed or handwritten and we welcome drawings and illustrations.
The winners of each category will receive a £100 cash prize and a £50 book voucher during a prize giving event in July. The winning entries and the names of the authors will be published on our website for the International Day of Peace on the 21st September.
