Citizenship Studies for OCR GCSE Short Course
This resource may have a limited range as it is geared to a specific examination specification of the OCR GCSE Short Course and the teaching of key stage 4 Citizenship. The material is organised around three themes, Rights and Responsibilities, Government and Participation, paralleling the GCSE question areas. The textbook is well broken up with pictures and graphic material, with the pitch of writing aimed at the lower and middle ability range.
Although the material is targetted at key stage 4 pupils many of the themes could be introduced at key stage 3 with additional materials. It contains question points that are useful and could be used to form the basis of lesson plans. Key words and ideas for coursework are highlighted throughout the text and guidance for exam preparation and assignments is provided at the end of the book. Topics covered in the student book include rules and laws, consumer law, employment, community issues (the elderly and refugees), family and school, government (managing the economy), power of the media, politics, global citizenship and justice. The topics covered broadly correspond with the QCA scheme of work for Citizenship at key stage 4, particularly the units 'Global Issues, local action', 'How and why laws are made', 'How the economy functions' and 'rights and responsibilities'.
The teacher resource provides answers to questions in the student book, additional photocopiable extension materials on all topics, advice on management and further support and resources. While everyone should be able to gain something from the book, its association with a specific exam may be a restricting factor.
