Somewhere to run to
This interactive resource from the British Red Cross enables young people to create their own model of an emergency camp through considering the tough choices people make in a disaster. It can be linked to many primary subjects including Citizenship, Geography, Art and Design, Literacy, Maths and History, and encourages the development of many key skills, including:
- critical thinking
- negotiation
- solving problems
- making decisions
- teamwork
- listening
- empathy
- communication
- considering multiple perspectives
- creative development.
The activity can be completed during a two-hour session or it can be extended to cover more time or separate sessions over several days. The booklet outlines different ways to introduce the activity plus extension activities to bring in different skills. A useful and imaginative resource that will really engage children and get them to think about other people's perspectives.
