Mission: Explore 7-11 11-14 Book

This isn't really a teaching resource, and it's not very obviously 'global dimension' but it's well worth including on this website because - well, it's just inspirational. Written by the intriguingly named "Geography Collective" this little book suggests 102 "missions" for young people to undertake which will galvanise them into exploring the world around them and doing really 'out of the ordinary' stuff whilst staying quite local.

Just reading through the missions sets you thinking about your perceptions of the world... For example you are challenged to:

  • Become an extreme stair climber
  • Let a dog take you for a walk
  • Say hello to your neighbour
  • Use less water
  • Navigate like a bat
  • and... scary one this... Test your teachers!

There is lots of sensible stuff about staying safe and looking after the environment whilst you carry out the missions. There's also a website with additional missions where you can feed in reports about the missions you've done. You could try using this in the Geography classroom, but it's probably best used at weekends or over the holidays - perhaps with a follow-up discussion in class about missions accomplished! There are two other books in this series - Mission: Explore On The Road and Mission: Explore Camping.
