CAABU lesson plans
CAABU is the Council for Arab-British Understanding. The lesson plans on their website are in two sections:
- Arab, Islam and stereotypes
- Palestine and Israel
The lessons promote an understanding of Arab and Middle Eastern people and culture, and encourage critical thinking, forcing students to question their values and perceptions and take broader perspectives when analyzing these issues. Lessons include specific reading materials with questions for teachers to raise with students, and group discussion points. There is also a very good lesson on famous Arab Muslim women.
There are no specific curriculum links provided, nor are there suggestions for which age groups they relate to. However they would be suitable for secondary teaching within various subject areas, including Citizenship, Geography and Media Studies.
Given the sensitivity of some of the issues, particularly those relating to Palestine and Israel, teachers may wish to present a range of different perspectives.
