Mary, Juma and Simba the dog
I loved this book! It's a good story with crazy, evocative illustrations, witty, lively text and a warm insight into Kenyan urban life. Mary and Juma follow their puppy, Simba, who is always in trouble, through the busy streets of Ziwa, a town on the coast of Kenya. They have to find mum's missing necklace. "That puppy is to blame for sure" mum had stormed. Their search led them to a treasure trove in the heart of the great baobab tree and the culprit, the ekegonkuru bird.
The detailed illustrations will fascinate children. The information for teachers and children explores the local context and some of the local terms, like matatu (a fast minibus overflowing with people and loud music). There are many suggestions for literacy activities but there is so much more to this book. Enjoy it!
You can complement the Mary, Juma and Simba story with a disk that has over 100 images from the big book, an interactive map of Mombasa (in Kenya) and audio and video readings of the story.
