1 December every year: Raising awareness of HIV/AIDS and its treatment and prevention.
Approximately 34 million people in the world are living with HIV/AIDS, the majority of these in sub-Saharan Africa. The United Nations, in conjunction with the World Health Organisation, has declared 1 December World AIDS Day.
For more information, visit the World AIDS Day website set up by the National Aids Trust (NAT) in the UK. NAT has also produced a schools pack, which is available to download at: www.nat.org.uk/HIV-facts/School-Packs.aspx.
There are some good images available of people marking World AIDS Day around the world at The Big Picture - Boston.com (December 2011 archive, scroll down for World AIDS Day pictures.)
